The Manual of the Mace The business and standards of the Guild are laid out in the Manual of the Mace that is issued to every new member. The Manual is the 'bible' of the Guild and gives useful information about the duties of a mace-bearer (or any other title used by the member) and the way in which civic protocol and other traditions should be observed. It is also an authority on precedence. The first Manual was produced in 1936 and the current edition is the sixth version. The procedures are copied by most civic authorities and the Manual is the basis of other reference books in current use.
